Wolters Kluwer Health Awards Wilkes University Inaugural Facts & Comparisons® Academic Partnership Program Advancement of Clinical Education (ACE) Curriculum Grant

1/05/10

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that Wilkes University’s Nesbitt School of Pharmacy is the winner of the 2010 Facts & Comparisons® Academic Partnership Program Advancement of Clinical Education (ACE) Curriculum Grant. Wilkes will receive a $10,000 grant for use in developing drug information and/or pharmacy informatics curriculum.

The university intends to utilize the grant to implement a course focused on strengthening student skills in information mastery and clinical decision-making. The course, Information Mastery, will highlight a new approach to utilizing drug information in the pharmacy school curriculum and will incorporate the appropriate technology to support both teaching and learning.

“The Facts and Comparisons APP ACE Curriculum Grant would help enhance the course and expand its ability to provide hands-on, active learning to enrolled students,” states the Wilkes proposal. “Student access to electronic resources and point-of-care information is increasing at Wilkes, but is still limited. The grant would allow each student the opportunity to experience supervised, hands-on learning as well as provide access to various subscriptions and point-of-care information sources that help guide clinical practice.”

Wolters Kluwer Health established the ACE Curriculum Development Grant to promote quality pharmacy education to support continued educational improvement through increased drug information knowledge. It also fosters increased awareness of referential drug information resources and enhanced referential tool utilization.

“Wolters Kluwer Health is committed to supporting schools of pharmacy through educational grants to aid in the advancement of drug information knowledge,” said Arvind Subramanian, President and CEO, Wolters Kluwer Health Clinical Solutions division. “The Facts & Comparisons Academic Partnership Program ACE Curriculum grant will serve to advance the drug knowledge of Wilkes University students; we believe this knowledge will allow them to become better pharmacists as they transition from their academic to their professional pharmacy careers.”

Facts & Comparisons 4.0 provides retail pharmacies and academia with online access to the most up-to-date drug information tailored to their unique needs, enabling better therapeutic decisions in less time. For the academic community, Facts & Comparisons 4.0 provides students, residents and faculty with instant access to reliable, current drug information and medication management tools. Helpful links, student and resident support, scholarships and other information are also available to help meet course and drug reference needs.

For pharmacies, Facts & Comparisons 4.0 addresses the key pain points of workflow efficiency and patient safety by providing the tools and information needed to support drug dispensing activities. These include patient safety screenings for Drug Utilization Review and drug reference information, which result in a decrease in drug dispensing errors.

Wilkes University was selected from a pool of applicants based on the degree to which the proposed project would enhance its drug information education and/or foster improved clinical communication between pharmacists, patients and other clinicians through the use of current drug information tools. To be eligible for the grant, schools had to be current members of the Facts & Comparisons Academic Partnership Program. Applicants were required to be on the faculty of an ACPE-accredited or ACPE pre-candidate status school/college of pharmacy, and applications needed to clearly demonstrate that the curriculum development would support new PharmD program courses or training exercises.
