TAMPA, Fla. – A snapshot of the latest developments in the fast-paced healthcare reform movement and what they may mean to the final outcome will be the focus of the September meeting of the Tampa Bay Association of Health Underwriters (TBAHU).
During the Sept. 10 lunch meeting, David A. Pearson, a Tampa-based partner with Constangy, Brooks & Smith, LLP, will present “Healthcare Reform: The Gathering Storm,” during which he will share with TABHU members and guests the most recent developments in the rapidly evolving debate over healthcare reform.
“Things are moving so fast that it’s difficult from day-to-day to take the pulse of healthcare reform,” said Pearson, an employee benefits attorney. “There are two ends of the spectrum in this debate. At one end is the total collapse of reform efforts. At the other is the public option. Where members of Congress and the public at large fall on that spectrum shifts on a daily basis, as evidence by the recent expressions of indecision about the public option by some Democrats who previously supported the concept.”
Notes TBAHU President Kathleen Sullivan: “Dave’s presentation kicks off a very important year of meetings for TBAHU, all of which will be geared toward educating our members and the public about healthcare reform and achieving clarity in what is and will continue to be a highly volatile debate.”
Sullivan notes that TBAHU, one of the largest local chapters of the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU), is dedicated to serving the needs of the licensed health insurance agents, brokers, consultants and benefits professionals that make up its membership. The chapter is also committed to executing NAHU’s vision of ensuring that every American has access to private sector solutions for health, financial and retirement security, as well as the services of experienced insurance professionals.
“Cutting through the rhetoric to gain a better understanding of the nuances of what is being proposed to reform our nation’s healthcare system is critical to achieving that mission,” said Sullivan, executive vice president of sales and marketing for Lakeland, Fla.-based First Service Administrators, Inc.
The meeting, sponsored by MetLife, will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10 at the Tampa Marriott Westshore, 1001 N. Westshore Blvd., Tampa. It begins at 11:30 a.m., and lunch will be served. The cost is $15 for members and $25 for non-members. To register to attend the meeting, email info@tampabayhealthunderwriters.org.
