Magnetic Makes Sanctuary’s Mission the Focal Point of Center for Great Apes Web Site
8/27/2008
TAMPA, Fla. – (Aug. 27, 2008) – The story of its unique inhabitants and the loving care with which their special needs are met at the Center for Great Apes in Wauchula, Fla., unfolds through streaming video, rich photography and interactive graphics on the sanctuary’s new Web site, designed by Magnetic, a full-service Web development firm. “Our goal with this site was to capture the unique personalities of the apes that call the Center for Great Apes home and convey to visitors the truly extraordinary nature of the work done by the sanctuary’s staff and volunteers,” said Jennifer Bakunas, President, Magnetic. The not-for-profit Center for Great Apes (www.centerforgreatapes.org) is home to more than 40 apes who are housed in 10 large domed enclosures with attached nighthouses. An elevated 3,500 foot tunnel system connects all the enclosures, allowing the apes the freedom to run through the woods and across the creek. The largest chimpanzee habitat is more than 30 feet high and 90 feet long, while the newest habitat for orangutans is 34 feet high. The Arcus Great Ape Health Center includes a veterinary clinic, an indoor/outdoor quarantine facility for new arrivals, a commissary for ape-meal preparations and a laundry to clean ape blankets. “Our mission is to provide a permanent sanctuary in a safe and enriching environment for orangutans and chimpanzees who have been retired from the entertainment industry or research, or who are no longer wanted as pets,” said Patti Ragan, Founder and Executive Director, Center for Great Apes. “We needed a Web site that would convey that mission, educate visitors on great apes and provide current information on volunteer opportunities and sanctuary needs.” In addition to a streaming video that provides a visual and audio tour of the sanctuary, its mission and history, the Center for Great Apes Web site provides detailed information on the habitats and other structures, services provided and educational information. A photo gallery provides visitors with a peek into the daily lives of the apes, each of which is profiled on the site. The Web site also features information on how to “adopt” individual apes and become a member of the sanctuary, as well as a secure area for online donations and information.
